The Charity of Amy Temple is managed entirely by volunteers who are all from St Margaret’s.
We have seven Trustees in total and two of them also have responsibiliy of being the Charity’s Clerk and Treasurer.
Our Trustees come from a range of backgrounds and bring different skills and experience.
They carry out all maintenance supervision, as well as clerical, legal and finance work associated with the running of the Charity.
They meet regularly to ensure that best almshouse management practice is followed and that the cottages are kept up-to-date and well maintained.
Trustees can be contacted via the Clerk at charityofamytemple@gmail.com

Amy Temple (1856-1955) born in St Margaret's and daughter of a Royal Navy Officer made provisions in her will for almshouses to be built for poor widows and spinsters who were over 60 years of age and had lived in St Margaret's for at least 10 years
Following the establishment of the Trust in 1959, a plot of land in Chapel Lane was bought where previously the tennis courts of the Cliffe Hotel had been. Three cottages were built and the first ladies took up residence in 1961. In the early 1990’s a fourth cottage was added.
New build development
In 2012 the Trustees carried out a study to understand the current need and demand for our type of accommodation. What they found was that although both our village and indeed the wider world had changed since the late 1950’s, there is still a strong demand for good quality, affordable accommodation for older single ladies of limited means.
On the strength of this study a further three larger cottages were built and the first residents moved into them in the summer of 2015.
Renovation of Cottages
Following the successful completion of the three new cottages, the Trustees decided to extend the four original cottages to provide improved sleeping arrangements, as well as renovating them all with modern fixtures and fittings of a high standard to ensure the Charity could offer residents the best accommodation possible which they would enjoy for many years to come.
August 2020 marked the completion of this work. Each cottage now has a full-size bedroom with fitted wardrobes replacing the original curtained-off alcove, as well as an extended and fully modernised bathroom, open plan kitchen and french doors leading to an outside terrace
